Featured Projects
Western Washington University - House of Healing
In partnership with Rolluda Architects, Coast Salish tribal nations, and the Western Native American Student Union, this Coast Salish style longhouse was designed and built to be a place for healing and fathering for the entire community.
A large component of the project was the gathering hall, comprised of 20" diameter Douglas-Fir timber columns and beams, carrying exposed glulam roof framing members. The tribal student center featured heavy timber beams and pole structures throughout its entire footprint and included exposed timber roof trusses. Concealed connections allowed for a feeling of design that celebrated and preserved the client’s vision for a traditional longhouse. Our team worked closely with a tribal design consultant to ensure our team met the goals of Western Washington University to respect the Coast Salish’s aesthetic requirements.
Snoqualmie Valley School District - Early Learning Center
In partnership with SCR Architects, this project expanded capacity from five classrooms in Snoqualmie Elementary School to eight classrooms total. The structural portions of the project included a new heavy timber covered play area comprised of exposed steel columns and glulam beam roof framing. Our team was asked with removing the exterior walls off of existing classrooms and adding new structural foundations and roof framing members to increase the classroom square footages, allowing for more classroom spaces. New shear walls were added to the existing building as part of a seismic renovation, increasing the life safety performance of the building during and after a seismic event. Additional design considerations included remodeling of existing interior spaces, supporting new wall framing, and adding structural supporting members to carry the loads from new mechanical unit upgrades. There was also a feature canopy as shown in the photo above, comprised of concrete columns painted as crayons that supported a new steel entrance structure.
